ABOUT REIKI
Reiki is a healing technique that originated in Japan and
has now gained recognition worldwide. It involves channeling
energy to promote balance and healing in both the mind and body.
Reiki is often used to reduce stress, alleviate emotional discomfort,
and support physical well-being.
One of the key benefits of Reiki is its simplicity—once learned,
it can be practiced anytime and anywhere, allowing individuals to
heal themselves and others. Whether you're looking to relieve
tension, recharge your energy, or enhance your overall wellness,
Reiki offers a natural and powerful way to support
your health and well-being.
1 What is Reiki?
2 What is Usui Reiki?
Usui Reiki is an energy work method that was started in 1922 by Mikao Usui
in Japan. The key feature of Usui Reiki is that anyone can learn to use it through
an energy transmission called an "attunement." You don’t need any special talents
or prior experience—Reiki allows you to use natural energy to bring balance to
your mind and body.
Today, Reiki is widely practiced around the world, and the most well-known style is
"Usui Reiki." This method, created over 100 years ago by Usui, remains beloved
by many to this day.
There are two main types of Reiki practice
:Usui Reiki: The traditional Japanese energy work method started
by Usui in 1922.
:Other Approaches: Besides Usui Reiki, various other Reiki methods have spread across the world.
In our classes, you can learn Usui-style Traditional Japanese Reiki, based on the teachings of the Japan Reiki Association.
Western Reiki is primarily focused on healing and has become widely practiced across the world. After World War II, Reiki nearly disappeared in Japan, but it spread throughout the West and was reintroduced to Japan in the 1980s. Today, it is well-known in Japan as well.
In Traditional Japanese Reiki, healing is just the starting point. It aims to balance the mind and body and ultimately achieve "Anshin Ritsumei," which means inner peace and balance, enriching one's entire life. In simpler terms, it's not only about physical health, but also about making every day happier, enjoying life, and fostering personal growth and happiness.
Both forms use the same Reiki energy, but the goals differ slightly. In our classes, we focus on Traditional Japanese Reiki, helping you become the person you want to be and making every day more joyful and fulfilling.
Currently, about 99% of the world practices Western Reiki, while Traditional Japanese Reiki is practiced by less than 1%, making it incredibly rare. This is why, at the Japan Reiki Association, we refer to it as the "Lost Half" or the "Hidden Half," with the goal of reviving and spreading it once again.
3 What’s the Difference Between Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki?
Energy Balance:
Reiki helps smooth the flow of energy within your body, bringing balance to both mind and body. Blocked energy is released, allowing you to regain a sense of lightness and equilibrium.
Relaxation:
A Reiki session alleviates stress and brings a sense of calm and relaxation. In the midst of a busy life, it offers a peaceful, comforting experience.
Awakening of the Mind:
Reiki encourages self-reflection, promoting positive insights and changes. It lightens your heart, helping you discover new aspects of yourself that you may not have noticed before.
4 The Appeal of Reiki
5 The History of Reiki
Mikao Usui
Mikao Usui founded Reiki in Japan in 1922. During his spiritual training on Mount Kurama, he experienced a powerful connection with the universe's energy. From this experience, he developed "Usui Reiki" as a method to heal others using that energy. Usui trained 21 Reiki Masters, passing on his techniques to the next generation.
Chujiro Hayashi
Chujiro Hayashi, a student of Mikao Usui, established the "Hayashi Reiki Kenkyukai" (Hayashi Reiki Research Society) in Tokyo after retiring from the navy. He incorporated elements of traditional Oriental medicine into Reiki, developing techniques that focused on meridians, acupoints, and chakras. Hayashi's contributions played a significant role in further spreading Reiki.
Hawayo Takata
Hawayo Takata, originally from Hawaii, learned Reiki in Japan during the 1930s. She brought Usui Reiki back to Hawaii and played a pivotal role in spreading it throughout the United States and Europe.
The Reiki teachers she trained were instrumental in the global dissemination of Western-style Reiki.
The Spread of Reiki
Japan: Traditional Japanese Reiki saw a decline in popularity after the chaos of World War II, but it began to regain attention in the 1980s.
Worldwide: Western-style Reiki spread through Hawayo Takata, and today, Reiki is a widely recognized healing method around the world.
